Diode, CO2 or fiber?
Diode
Cheapest and most compact. Engraves wood, leather, slate and coated metal, cuts plywood up to 10 to 20 mm on the strongest machines. Cannot cut clear acrylic or metal. Best diode lasersCO2
Cuts clear and coloured acrylic, thick wood, fabric and leather fast and clean. Bigger, needs venting and a tube that wears. Best CO2 lasersFiber
For metal: marks and engraves stainless, aluminium, brass and anodised parts in seconds. Poor on wood and clear plastics. Best fiber lasersFrequently asked questions
What is the difference between diode, CO2 and fiber lasers?
Diode lasers (about 450 nm) are cheap and compact and engrave or cut wood, leather and dark materials. CO2 lasers (10.6 µm) cut clear acrylic, thicker wood and fabric quickly. Fiber lasers (1064 nm) mark and engrave metal but are poor at cutting organic materials.
How much laser power do I need?
Look at optical output, not electrical input. 10W optical engraves well and cuts 3 mm plywood, 20W cuts 6 to 10 mm wood in a few passes, and 40W and up cuts thicker stock in one pass. For clear acrylic you need CO2 regardless of wattage.
Is a laser engraver safe to use at home?
An enclosed Class 1 machine with an interlock is the safest choice. Open-frame lasers need certified glasses for the right wavelength, a non-flammable surface, ventilation to the outside and someone watching while they run.
