Quick verdict

The Genmitsu L8 is SainSmart's enclosed diode laser, sold as a 20W at $699 or a 40W at $1,199. The 20W gives a 400 x 400 mm bed inside a Class 1 enclosure with a door sensor, flame sensor, tilt stop, key switch and emergency stop, and it ships pre-assembled with an air pump, honeycomb and a LightBurn-compatible camera. SainSmart rates it at 40,000 mm/min, quick for a gantry diode. The compromises are manual focus with gauge blocks and a thin spec sheet that leaves out the machine weight. For an indoor-friendly 20W with everything in the box, it is strong value.

What you still need

Venting the exhaust out a window or SainSmart's optional air purifier, a rotary roller for cylinders, a fire extinguisher, and a LightBurn licence if you want the camera workflow (CutLabX is free)

Material reality check

Cuts plywood, basswood, cardboard, leather, felt, fabric and dark opaque acrylic. Engraves wood, leather, stone, ceramics, stainless steel and coated metals. SainSmart's manual says it cannot cut clear acrylic, and as a diode it cannot cut blue acrylic or metal; the 0.05 mm stainless claim means foil only. Never laser PVC or vinyl.

Pros and cons

Why we like it

  • Class 1 enclosure with door interlock, flame sensor, tilt stop, e-stop and key switch
  • Ships pre-assembled with air pump, honeycomb and a LightBurn-compatible camera
  • 40,000 mm/min rated speed is fast for a diode
  • Full 400 x 400 mm bed inside the enclosure on the 20W
  • Wi-Fi and USB-C, with the free CutLabX app or LightBurn

Watch out for

  • Manual focus with gauge blocks; one owner found the supplied gauges did not match the manual
  • No published machine weight, and the box is a large 715 x 621 mm
  • The 40W version costs $500 more
  • The store page still lists the rotary rollers and air purifier as coming soon, so check availability first
  • Like any diode it cannot cut clear or blue acrylic or metal
