Quick verdict

The F2 Ultra is xTool's top desktop galvo: a 60W MOPA fiber for metal plus a 40W blue diode for organics, in a 21.6 kg enclosed tower with a 220 x 220 mm field. MOPA lets you tune pulse width, which is what makes repeatable color marking on stainless, deep black marks and fast 3D relief on metal possible. Dual 48MP cameras, autofocus and 15,000 mm/s marking make it quick to set up and quick to run. The trade-offs are the $5,299 price, a field sized for small parts, and xTool's decision to drop LightBurn support entirely. For a metal engraving business it earns its keep; for a hobbyist the F1 Ultra does most of the same for $2,300 less.

What you still need

Fume extraction, either vented outside or through a purifier (the $6,969 Deluxe bundle adds the AP2 purifier, conveyor and RA3 rotary). The conveyor for longer batches is $450 more as a bundle. Add a rotary for rings and tumblers, laser safety glasses rated for 1064 nm and 445 nm, and fixtures or jigs for repeat jobs. Budget time to learn MOPA settings for color work.

Material reality check

The MOPA marks and engraves stainless, titanium, aluminum, brass, copper, gold, silver and platinum, does color marking on stainless steel and titanium, and cuts sheet up to 2 mm stainless or brass and 1 mm aluminum (gold only 0.2 mm). The diode engraves and cuts wood, leather and dark acrylic, and marks slate and stone. The diode cannot cut clear or blue acrylic. Glass is on xTool's materials list, but expect to experiment. Never laser PVC or vinyl.

Pros and cons

Why we like it

  • 60W MOPA gives controllable color marking and deep black marks on metal without spray
  • Cuts up to 2 mm stainless and brass, enough for jewelry and small signs
  • 15,000 mm/s galvo speed for real batch production
  • Dual 48MP cameras and autofocus make lining up small parts easy
  • A 40W diode in the same box handles wood, leather and dark acrylic

Watch out for

  • At $5,299 it is a business tool, not a hobby purchase
  • No LightBurn: xTool dropped compatibility, so you are locked into xTool Studio
  • Not Class 1, so safety glasses for 1064 nm and 445 nm are part of the deal
  • Small 220 x 220 mm field unless you add the conveyor
  • No air assist port at all, per xTool's own Q&A
