Quick verdict

The LX2 is LaserPecker's first full-size enclosed laser: a 500 x 305 mm Class 1 box with tool-free swappable heads. The $1,499 Basic Bundle on the global store ships with the 20W diode, which LaserPecker rates for 12 mm of paulownia in one pass; the 40W head ($1,799 as a bundle) is where its 22 mm claims come from, and a 2W infrared head adds metal marking. A 12MP camera, probe-based 3D focus, an external Smart Air Assist and a claimed 1,000 mm/s complete the package. Reviewers praise the build quality and camera alignment but report beta-quality software, too few slats and a fragile air assist cable. Treat the one-pass depth figures as maker claims.

What you still need

Extra slats ($49 for eight) or your own honeycomb, a window duct for the exhaust hose or the $599 Smoke Purifier, the Riser Base ($299, or $499 with the Rotary Extension) for tall items and tumblers, the 40W head ($1,099) if cutting is the main job and the 2W IR head ($599) for metal marking, Fire Safety Set refills ($69 for two), and a LightBurn licence if you prefer it to LaserPecker Design Space

Material reality check

The diode heads cut wood, plywood, MDF, leather, felt, paper and opaque acrylic (maker one-pass limits: 12 mm paulownia and 12 mm black acrylic with the 20W, 22 mm and 20 mm with the 40W), and engrave bamboo, slate, stone, glazed ceramic, dark glass, coated or anodized metal and 304 stainless. LaserPecker also claims 0.5 mm stainless cutting with the 40W head; CyberShack said its metal tests seemed to max out there but gave no pass counts. The 2W infrared head marks bare metals such as gold, silver, copper and aluminum, and plastics, but does not cut. No head processes clear acrylic or clear glass without a coating. Never laser PVC or vinyl.

Pros and cons

Why we like it

  • Tool-free swappable heads (20W, 40W and 60W diode plus a 2W 1064 nm infrared) let one enclosure move from fine engraving to thick cutting to metal marking
  • Large 500 x 305 mm bed in a Class 1 enclosure, with a front door for loading as well as the top lid
  • Claimed 1,000 mm/s with 10,000 mm/s² acceleration on dual Y-axis linear guides, quick for an enclosed diode
  • 12MP camera placement, Point-to-Shape positioning and a probe that maps curved surfaces for 3D adaptive focus
  • Smart Air Assist and an automatic fire extinguisher module come in every current bundle, and LightBurn is supported

Watch out for

  • The $1,499 base bundle has the 20W head; the 40W that most of LaserPecker's cutting claims refer to costs $300 more as a bundle, and the IR head another $599
  • Only four slats and no honeycomb in the box; TechRadar and FauxHammer both found four were not enough
  • PC software is still LDS Beta: reviewers hit calibration, Wi-Fi and stability problems, and a LightBurn forum user could not control focus, air assist or the camera from LightBurn
  • Air assist is a separate box on a proprietary cable that broke during TechRadar's test, and every head swap means reconnecting a data cable and air tube
  • One-pass depth claims are unverified: FauxHammer's single-pass cut of 18 mm plywood caught fire, and the 60W head is still 'coming soon' and out of stock
