Quick verdict

The A70 Max is AtomStack's big open-frame diode with a claimed 70W of optical output, switchable to 35W, on an 850 x 800 mm bed. That power is the whole point: AtomStack claims 28 mm paulownia and 25 mm black acrylic in a single pass, which is depth you normally associate with a CO2 tube. It ships with an adjustable air pump, auto focus, a touch screen for offline work, and flame, tilt and emergency stop protection. The trade-offs are a 400 mm/s top speed, a frame that needs a large bench, and an open 70W blue beam that makes a lot of smoke and reflected light. Treat the power figure as a maker claim, because we found no independent measurement.

What you still need

Honeycomb panels (the Basic Bundle with four F4N panels costs $100 more), proper exhaust or the B4 enclosure (about $690 more in bundle pricing), the R8 Pro rotary roller (about $200 more via the Pro Bundle), extra 455 nm rated glasses for anyone else in the room, and a LightBurn licence if you outgrow AtomStack Studio and LaserGRBL

Material reality check

Cuts wood, plywood, MDF, leather, card and dark opaque acrylic; the 25 to 28 mm one-pass claims are for paulownia and black acrylic, so expect less in hardwood. Engraves slate, stone, ceramic, anodised aluminium and coated metals, and can surface-mark stainless steel. It cannot cut metal in any useful way, and like every diode it cannot cut clear or blue acrylic. Never cut PVC or vinyl: the chlorine fumes are toxic and corrode the machine.

you need a Class 1 enclosed machine you can run in a shared room, and can live with thinner cuts: xTool S1 40W

Pros and cons

Why we like it

  • Claimed 70W optical output cuts thick softwood and dark acrylic in one pass where 20W machines need several
  • Huge 850 x 800 mm bed takes large signs and batches of parts
  • Air pump with 0-60 L/min adjustable flow is in the box
  • One-key auto focus and a 4.3 inch touch screen for offline jobs
  • Flame alarm, emergency stop and tilt detection come as standard

Watch out for

  • A 70W open beam throws a lot of smoke and glare, so it needs a ventilated workshop or the B4 enclosure, which adds about $690 in AtomStack's bundle pricing
  • 400 mm/s top speed is slow for photo engraving across such a big bed
  • 1056 x 1128 mm footprint takes a whole bench, and the frame arrives as parts to assemble
  • No camera, so positioning relies on the red cross and framing
  • Spec sheet is sloppy: the listed 12V 5A power supply cannot feed a 70W module, and we found no independent power test

How we rank: by our own scores for power, speed, ease of use, safety and value, from the maker's published specs and independent tests where they exist. Some links earn us a commission (for example TwoTrees, SainSmart, Gweike and Amazon). That never changes a score or the order of a list (disclosure).
