Quick verdict
The xTool MetalFab is a 1200W fiber laser welder with an optional enclosed CNC cutting bed that runs from the same laser source. The welder and cutter together cost $15,999 on xTool's US store and cover handheld welding up to 5 mm steel, burr-free CNC cuts up to 10 mm carbon steel with oxygen or 5 mm stainless, rust cleaning and light engraving on a 610 x 610 mm bed. Make's January 2026 review found it easy enough for a welding novice to lay good beads within minutes. It is not a hobby laser engraver: it needs a heavy 240V circuit, assist gas or dry compressed air, a lot of floor space and serious laser safety around the handheld gun.
What you still need
A dedicated 200 to 240V circuit installed by an electrician (21A or more per the product page, 25A or more per xTool's setup guide), argon or nitrogen cylinders with regulators for welding, 99.99% oxygen and the add-on double-layer nozzle set for thick carbon steel, nitrogen or a compressor with an air dryer (sold separately) for other cuts, ducting for the cutter's exhaust fan or an air purifier above 325 CFM, filler wire, replacement nozzles and protective lenses, N95 or better masks, a fire-safe welding area with screens, and extra laser eye protection for anyone else in the roomMaterial reality check
Welds, cuts and cleans stainless steel, carbon and galvanized steel, aluminum and its alloys, titanium, brass, and nickel, magnesium and zinc alloys. CNC engraving works only on non-reflective metals such as stainless, carbon steel, galvanized sheet and anodized aluminum; xTool says not to engrave brass, copper or silver. It is a metalworking tool, not an engraver for wood, acrylic or leather. Never process PVC or vinyl.Better alternative if

Pros and cons
Why we like it
- One 1200W fiber source welds, cuts, cleans rust and engraves metal
- CNC bed cuts up to 10 mm carbon steel with oxygen and 5 mm stainless burr-free, per xTool
- Cutting cabinet is enclosed, with lid and drawer interlocks, a filtered lid and an emergency stop
- Real-time height tracking plus a 16MP overview camera and a close-range camera for placing and nesting parts
- Make's reviewer, who had little welding experience, was drawing nice beads within minutes
Watch out for
- $15,999 for the 1200W welder and cutter, and the cutter cannot run without the welder
- Needs a dedicated 200 to 240V circuit of at least 21A plus argon, nitrogen, oxygen or a dry compressed air supply
- Handheld welding is an open Class 4 beam, so the area needs screening and everyone needs eye protection
- The 610 x 610 mm bed is small for sheet work, and xTool warns that cutting 10 mm steel continuously for about 15 minutes needs a cooling break
- The 158 kg cutter needs 100 cm of clearance on every side, and xTool says not to engrave reflective metals like copper
