Quick verdict

The Falcon A1 is Creality's entry enclosed diode laser: a 10W optical module in a Class 1 box with a lid interlock, a built-in camera and CoreXY motion rated at 600 mm/s. It arrives assembled, and the camera plus the free Falcon Design Space make placing designs on odd-shaped blanks easy. The 305 x 381 mm bed and 10W module are the limits: Creality itself shows 6 mm wood as the cutting ceiling, so this is an engraver that also cuts thin sheet, not a cutting workhorse. At $549 you are paying for the enclosure and camera rather than raw power.

What you still need

A window vent run for the included exhaust hose or an air purifier, the honeycomb bed (included in the $599 Basic Kit, not the $549 machine-only option), a rotary kit for tumblers, a fire extinguisher, and a LightBurn licence if you prefer it to the free Falcon Design Space

Material reality check

Cuts thin plywood, basswood, cardboard, paper, felt, leather and thin dark opaque acrylic. Engraves wood, bamboo, leather, slate, ceramic, glass, coated or anodized aluminum and stainless steel. It cannot cut clear or blue acrylic, glass or any metal, and bare metal marking is limited at 10W. Never laser PVC or vinyl.

Better alternative if

if you want more cutting power in an enclosure with the air pump and honeycomb included, the Genmitsu L8 20W costs about $150 more: SainSmart Genmitsu L8 20W

Pros and cons

Why we like it

  • Arrives fully assembled and is ready to run in minutes
  • Class 1 enclosure with lid interlock, so no goggles in normal use
  • Built-in camera for drag-and-drop placement, batch fill and outline tracing
  • CoreXY motion rated to 600 mm/s
  • QR-coded Creality materials load their settings automatically

Watch out for

  • Only 10W optical, so cutting tops out around 6 mm wood and is slow
  • Small 305 x 381 mm bed for a machine this size
  • USB only, no Wi-Fi on the base A1
  • Manual focus with a focus block, no autofocus
  • Heavy at 15.55 kg, and the honeycomb is not in the $549 machine-only option
