Quick verdict

The 2x4 is the entry into the AltMill platform and keeps everything that makes the machine interesting: HGR15 rails, ball screws on all three axes, closed-loop steppers and grblHAL. What you give up is width. At only 400 dollars less than the 4x4 it is worth thinking hard about whether the footprint is really the constraint, because the 4x4 is a lot more machine for a small step up in price.

Who this fits best

Shops that want AltMill rigidity but do not have room for a 4x4 footprint

Buy this if

Shops that want AltMill rigidity but do not have room for a 4x4 footprint. Same industrial motion system as the 4x4 in a smaller footprint.

Skip this if

Spindle sold separately, and narrow 2 foot X axis limits sheet work.

What else you still need

A spindle (sold separately, 1.5kW or 2.2kW), a VFD-ready power circuit, dust collection and a frame or table.

Material reality check

Ball screws and HGR15 rails make it properly capable in aluminium, and easy in wood. The 2 ft X axis limits full sheets.

Better alternative if...

you need full 4 x 4 ft capacity. See Sienci Labs AltMill MK2 4x4

Where it wins

  • Same industrial motion system as the 4x4 in a smaller footprint
  • Ball screws and HGR15 rails on all three axes
  • Closed-loop steppers with auto-correction
  • Free gSender software
  • Lower entry price into the AltMill platform

Where it falls short

  • Spindle sold separately
  • Narrow 2 foot X axis limits sheet work
  • Still heavy and a substantial build
  • Two to three week lead time
  • Price advantage over the 4x4 is small relative to the area you give up
