Quick verdict

The 2x2 is the smallest 5.1 Pro and the one that makes sense if bench space is the constraint rather than budget. You get the full 5 Pro motion system, HG-15 rails and ball screws on every axis, in a 24 inch square envelope. That combination is what lets it cut aluminium properly where the belt-driven Shapeokos struggle. Carbide thickened the baseframe tubes in August 2026, so check which revision you are buying.

Who this fits best

Someone with limited bench space who wants real rigidity and plans to cut aluminium

Buy this if

Someone with limited bench space who wants real rigidity and plans to cut aluminium. HG-15 linear rails on all three axes, not V-wheels.

Skip this if

Small work area for the money compared to belt-driven machines, and heavy at around 68kg, so it needs a proper bench.

What else you still need

The VFD spindle or a compact router, a solid bench for about 68kg, dust collection and clamps.

Material reality check

Linear rails and a stiff frame make it good in hardwood and aluminium. Steel is possible with small tools and patience.

Better alternative if...

you want a bigger bed with similar rigidity. See Shapeoko 5 Pro

Where it wins

  • HG-15 linear rails on all three axes, not V-wheels
  • 16mm ball screws on X and Y with a 1610 on Z
  • Compact 2x2 footprint fits a small shop but keeps the 5 Pro rigidity
  • VFD spindle option for quieter, more capable cutting
  • Baseframe tubes were thickened in the August 2026 revision

Where it falls short

  • Small work area for the money compared to belt-driven machines
  • Heavy at around 68kg, so it needs a proper bench
  • VFD spindle is an extra cost on top
  • Still a GRBL-class controller rather than an industrial one
  • Carbide Create Pro is a paid upgrade for 3D work
