Quick verdict
The Gen 2 Elite is the version of Onefinity most buyers should actually be comparing now. The headline changes over the older X-35 and X-50 are the RTS-2 closed-loop controller, the 15 inch standalone HMI, and 60mm hardened steel X shafts. Closed loop matters here: the motors detect and correct lost steps rather than silently ruining a part halfway through. Spindle is extra, so budget for that. Shipping started February 2026.
Who this fits best
A woodworker who wants closed-loop precision and a standalone controller without moving to an Avid-class machine
Buy this if
A woodworker who wants closed-loop precision and a standalone controller without moving to an Avid-class machine. Closed-loop 2 Nm motors on X and Y with 1.2 Nm braking on Z, so lost steps get corrected.
Skip this if
Spindle is sold separately, so the real entry price is higher than the headline, and heavier and needs a dedicated bench.
What else you still need
Remember that the headline price is not the final price. You still need the router or spindle, a dust shoe, better workholding, and probably the QCW frame if you want the nicest everyday workflow.
Material reality check
This machine shines in wood, plywood, hardwood signs, cabinetry parts, and general workshop use. Light aluminum is possible with the right spindle and setup, but metal is not the reason to buy it.
Better alternative if...
you want a polished turnkey ecosystem at a lower starting price and like having the router included from day one See Shapeoko 5 Pro .
Where it wins
- Closed-loop 2 Nm motors on X and Y with 1.2 Nm braking on Z, so lost steps get corrected
- Runs standalone from a 15 inch touchscreen with no computer attached
- 60mm hardened steel X shafts are a real step up in rigidity over the X-50 generation
- 165mm of Z travel on the Z-20 slider, which is generous for 3D work
- Made in Canada and North America, so no import tariff
Where it falls short
- Spindle is sold separately, so the real entry price is higher than the headline
- Heavier and needs a dedicated bench
- Proprietary controller limits how far you can customise the motion stack
- Redline spindles tie you into the Onefinity ecosystem
- Shipping ran in batches after the February 2026 launch
