Quick verdict

The Carvera Air is the cheaper enclosed Makera and the one most people should look at first. Be clear on the difference from the full Carvera though, because the marketing blurs it: the Air has a quick manual tool changer, roughly ten seconds by hand, not the Carvera's automatic 6-tool changer. Everything else is intact, including ball screws on all three axes and the enclosure. At 2699 dollars against 5799, the question is simply whether unattended tool changes are worth 3100 dollars to you.

Who this fits best

A quiet enclosed desktop machine for small precision parts, where automatic tool changing is not worth the extra money

Buy this if

A quiet enclosed desktop machine for small precision parts, where automatic tool changing is not worth the extra money. Enclosed desktop machine at less than half the price of the full Carvera.

Skip this if

The tool changer is manual and takes about 10 seconds, it is NOT the Carvera's automatic changer, and 200W spindle limits depth of cut in metal.

What else you still need

End mills, a dust extractor and materials. The enclosure, probe and software come with it, so the extra spend is small.

Material reality check

Good in wood, plastics, PCB and light aluminium. The 200W spindle means shallow passes in metal, and steel is not its job.

Better alternative if...

you want a real automatic tool changer instead of the manual quick-change. See Makera Carvera

Where it wins

  • Enclosed desktop machine at less than half the price of the full Carvera
  • Ball screws on all three axes
  • 30kg, so it can live on a normal desk
  • 4th axis option for rotary work
  • In stock and shipping rather than crowdfunding

Where it falls short

  • The tool changer is manual and takes about 10 seconds, it is NOT the Carvera's automatic changer
  • 200W spindle limits depth of cut in metal
  • Smaller envelope than the full Carvera
  • Laser is an extra
  • Makera CAM is still maturing
