Quick verdict
The 3020-PRO Ultra takes the 3020-PRO MAX V2 frame, 300 x 205 x 78mm of travel with dual steel guide rails on X, and fits a 710W compact router with a 6500-30000 RPM range plus 60mm NEMA 17 steppers. At $499 that combination makes it one of the more capable small machines for aluminum and brass, with Sainsmart quoting 1.5mm deep passes in aluminum. The router is manual speed only, so you set RPM on the dial rather than in your G-code. The rest of the motion system is still round rods and T8 lead screws, so the spindle has more power than the frame can fully use.
Who this fits best
Makers who want a compact desktop machine that can cut hardwood, brass and aluminum without immediately upgrading the spindle
Buy this if
Makers who want a compact desktop machine that can cut hardwood, brass and aluminum without immediately upgrading the spindle. 710W router with 6500-30000 RPM range is a big jump over the usual 300W DC spindle at this size.
Skip this if
Spindle speed is set by hand on the router dial, not controlled from G-code, and small 300 x 205mm work area for the price.
What else you still need
Flat end mills and single-flute bits for aluminum, a wasteboard over the aluminum bed, hearing protection, and dust collection since the router throws chips. A relay or smart switch if you want the router to turn on and off with the job, and the 69mm mount if you plan to swap routers.
Material reality check
Hardwood, plastics, acrylic, carbon fiber and brass are within reach. Aluminum works with sharp small bits, light step-overs and the maker's 1.5mm depth claim treated as a ceiling, not a default. Steel is out of scope.
Better alternative if...
choose the 4040-PRO if you need a bigger 400 x 400mm bed for signs and boards more than you need cutting power in metal. See Sainsmart Genmitsu 4040-PRO
Where it wins
- 710W router with 6500-30000 RPM range is a big jump over the usual 300W DC spindle at this size
- 60mm tall NEMA 17 steppers on all axes
- Same stiff all-metal 3020 frame with dual steel rails on X
- Six limit switches, E-stop, Z-probe and offline controller included
- Takes 65mm routers directly, 52mm spindles and lasers with the included adapter, 69mm with an optional mount
Where it falls short
- Spindle speed is set by hand on the router dial, not controlled from G-code
- Small 300 x 205mm work area for the price
- Y and Z still on round rods with T8 lead screws, so the frame, not the router, is the limit
- Trim routers are loud compared with a DC spindle
- Maker's 7.3 Nm stepper torque figure is not credible for NEMA 17 motors
