Quick verdict

This is VEVOR's top 4040: a 6061 aluminium frame with dual linear rails, ball screws and a 500W DC spindle with an ER11 collet. Work area is 400 x 400 x 95 mm and the machine weighs 22.8 kg, which is heavy for this size class and helps it more than the spindle does. The 12,000 RPM spindle is the limiting part: fine for wood, MDF and acrylic, but you will be running small cutters well below their ideal speed. It runs GRBL 1.1, so Candle, Easel and LightBurn all work. The trade-off is support: thin instructions and patchy quality control are the recurring complaints, so expect to sort out setup yourself.

Who this fits best

Hobbyists who want rails and ball screws in a 400 x 400 mm machine without paying for a name brand

Buy this if

Hobbyists who want rails and ball screws in a 400 x 400 mm machine without paying for a name brand. Linear rails and ball screws instead of V-wheels and lead screws at this price.

Skip this if

The 500W DC spindle tops out at 12,000 RPM, slow for small cutters in hardwood and aluminium, and documentation and instructions are a common complaint in buyer reviews.

What else you still need

A set of ER11 collets and 1/8 in carbide end mills, clamps or a hold-down system, dust collection, and a 65 mm trim router if you want more speed and power than the 500W spindle gives.

Material reality check

Wood, MDF, plywood, acrylic and plastics are its real job. VEVOR says it can mill 1/4 in aluminium with 0.1 to 0.3 mm passes and lubricant, which is possible but slow on a 12,000 RPM, 500W spindle. Steel is out.

Better alternative if...

you would rather have a larger 600 x 500 mm machine from a brand with better documentation and support for about the same money. See Genmitsu PROVerXL 6050 Plus

Where it wins

  • Linear rails and ball screws instead of V-wheels and lead screws at this price
  • 95 mm of Z clearance, enough for thick stock and relief work
  • 400 x 400 mm bed with an optional Y extension to 800 mm
  • Standard 52 mm spindle mount plus a 65 mm option, so a trim router upgrade is possible
  • At 22.8 kg it is roughly twice the mass of most 4040 hobby machines

Where it falls short

  • The 500W DC spindle tops out at 12,000 RPM, slow for small cutters in hardwood and aluminium
  • Documentation and instructions are a common complaint in buyer reviews
  • Generic white-label machine with a small user community compared to Genmitsu or Shapeoko
  • Y extension, rotary axis and laser are all extra-cost add-ons
  • Quality control is inconsistent according to buyer reviews
