Quick verdict
The 4040-PRO MAX is Genmitsu's 4040-PRO with an upgraded XZ module: linear guide rails on X and Z, a 65mm mount and a 710W trim router in place of the old 775 DC motor. You get 400 x 400 x 78mm of travel and 100mm of clearance under the gantry in a 24.6kg machine. The router is the big upgrade and makes hardwood and small-cutter aluminium jobs realistic. The trade-off is the drive side: NEMA17 steppers, lead screws and a 2000 mm/min top speed, so it is not fast and it will not hog out metal. Sainsmart's own PROVerXL 4030S costs less and has NEMA23 motors, which makes this one a harder sell unless you need the square bed.

Buy this if
Hobbyists who want a 400x400 desktop machine that can carve hardwood and do light aluminium work without stepping up to NEMA23 hardware. 710W trim router with ER11 collets instead of the small 775 motor on the older 4040 machines.
Skip this if
NEMA17 motors and a 2000 mm/min max speed keep it firmly in hobby territory, and lead screws on every axis, no ball screws at this price.
What else you still need
Budget for a dust shoe or vacuum setup, decent carbide end mills beyond the starter set, and CAM software (the VCarve Desktop bundle adds $300). The CTL4040 offline controller and the Wi-Fi module are sold separately if you want to run without a laptop tethered.
Material reality check
Wood, plastics, acrylic and PCB blanks are well within reach of the 710W router. Aluminium is possible with small single-flute cutters and shallow passes, but NEMA17 motors on lead screws limit feed and depth, so expect slow, careful metal work rather than real milling.
Better alternative if...
you can live with a 400 x 300 bed, the cheaper PROVerXL 4030S gives you NEMA23 motors, external drivers and much more Z travel with the same 710W router. See Sainsmart Genmitsu PROVerXL 4030S
Where it wins
- 710W trim router with ER11 collets instead of the small 775 motor on the older 4040 machines
- 100mm pass height under the gantry leaves room for thick stock and a 4th axis
- Linear guide rails on the X and Z axes stiffen the moving parts that take most of the cutting load
- T-track spoilboard with an aluminium centre bar fixes the sagging MDF bed of earlier 4040 models
- Semi-assembled, ships with Z-probe, limit switches, e-stop and clamps
Where it falls short
- NEMA17 motors and a 2000 mm/min max speed keep it firmly in hobby territory
- Lead screws on every axis, no ball screws at this price
- Only 78mm of actual Z travel despite the 100mm clearance headline
- Offline controller and Wi-Fi module are extra cost
- Running accuracy is quoted at only ±0.1mm
